Healthy Home @ Downsview Park
The Healthy Home @ Downsview Park (formally the Sustainable Condo) was built by Greening Homes in partnership with the CMHC and the ECOSmart Foundation. Greening Homes also took a leading role in introducing several alternative building materials to the space.
The full-size model condo showcased the latest and greatest products from the green building world. The exhibit was formally launched as an event with the Canada Green Building Council – Toronto Chapter in March, 2010. To ensure that public outreach was both on-going and successful, an interpreter was made available for public tours of the space for the life of the display.
Some of the products displayed in this project included:
- Natural earthen plaster walls
- Recycled cotton denim blue jean insulation
- Hempcrete insulation
- Milk paints
- Hemp oil stain
- FSC-certified and NAUF lumber and wood products
- Eco-logo certified high-recycled content drywall
- Bamboo flooring
- Recycled glass backsplash tile
- Recycled marble mosaic flooring
- PowerPipe drainwater heat recovery system
- WaterSense certified low-flow toilet
- Heat recovery ventilation (HRV) unit
- LED lighting
- Fully biodegradable site and display signage
In June 2011, Greening Homes “unbuilt” the exhibit with the goal to minimise waste:
- 69.2 % of the waste material from the demo of the condo was diverted from landfill, EXCLUSIVE of the framing lumber for the project (over 70 2x4s), which was de-nailed and stored for use in future Greening Homes projects
